Origins of the name

The hypotheses on the origin of the name, in medieval times Tigèsi, then Tièsi, and finally Thiesi, are not to be believed. The similarity to the Sardinian adjective tièsu (extended) and the derivation from the Phonecian word Bethiezi (house of my fortress), proposed by Spano, do not take into account the root tig-. The French academic Leroux notes the presence in the area of a Phoenician trading company called campo dei Thirèsi, registered in Tigèsi. The H was introduced for the first time in 1873 in a business document; we suppose that the name Tiesi could be confused with Tissi, generating delays in correspondence. The use of the Th was consolidated without opposition in 1924 and since then the name Thiesi has been used.
